The Swaledale is a hardy sheep suited to exposed hills. Crossed with Wensleydale or Teeswater to produce the Masham or with Bluefaced Leicester to produce the Mule, it is  at home on the moorlands of Northern England. The rather coarse wool is mainly used for carpets.
